Connecting the Wii to your HD TV (LCD TV, LED TV, Plasma TV)

In this post, I am showing you how you can bring out the best picture from your Nintendo Wii for your HD TV.

Unfortunately, the Wii itself doesn't have a HD output (HD stands for high definition, thus high screen resolution).
You can still create a nice picture on a LCD TV, LED TV or Plasma TV with the right settings and the right accessories.

This is how you should proceed:

  • Get a so-called component cable (see picture on right). The plug connection for the Wii has to be on one side and on the other side, there are a total of five cinch connectors. Red, green and blue are the three video signals – Red and white are the audio signals. Such a component cable can be found on Amazon.com (for people from the US) or on Amazon.co.uk (for people from the UK).
  • Connect the cable between your flat screen TV and the Wii. Upon connecting it to the HD TV, make sure that you don't mix up the red video connector with the red audio connector.
Plug the three video connectors (red, green and blue) into the corresponding video sockets of the "Component in"-inlet of your TV (Label of the sockets: red = PrCr, green = Y, blue = PbCb).
Plug the two audio connectors (red and white) into the audio sockets of the "Component in"-input.
  • Now adjust the source on your HD TV to "Component". You should be able to do this via the remote.
  • Now you have to let the Wii know that you have connected it to a flat screen TV. In order to do this, enter the Wii Menu and select the Wii icon on the bottom left. Then choose Wii Settings --> Screen --> TV Resolution. There you choose "EDTV or HDTV (480p)".
  • Now go back one level and choose "16:9" under Widescreen Settings.

That's it :)
You have now optimally adjusted everything to be able to bring out the best possible picture from the Nintendo Wii on your flatscreen TV.

Have fun gaming
Stefan
